"They say that that which a person resists persists. When it comes to innermost private thoughts, sometimes they can be downright scary. One way to avoid their persistence and potential actualization is through "free writing". That is, writing without self-censorship and ignoring all rules of grammar. The purpose is to decompress through the acknowledgment of every bad, inappropriate, immoral, and unspeakable thought by placing it on paper and, therefore, using it as a catalyst toward something productive. Then locking that book in a safe forever...or perhaps publishing it under a pen name and watching it become a bestseller as people devour it for the gory details or the sheer scintillating literary manifestation of your innermost dark thoughts." Check out Hugo's art on the cover of RPM Publisher's "Dark Thoughts: A journal for unspeakable musings and other confessions" by Raving Journals. Part of the Deranged Dalliances series. Share a pic of yourself in the comments section here or send it to us through the Contact Page on this website. After a month-long hiatus, Hugo has been making new pieces. This one seems to be some kind of cyborg. What do you think? Hugo has not yet started titling his art pieces. What would you call it if it were up to you?
Hugo just achieved two major milestones in his artistic life. First, he became a teenager not too long ago (he is 13). Secondly, he is officially a serious artist with his first art exhibition. The exhibit features 30 art pieces by the artist which he has produced since the age of 4 years old. Decipher for yourself the meaning of each artistic creation. Tell us if you can figure out which one was his very first art piece. Hint: it holds a unique spot in the gallery exhibition. Visit Hugo's first art exhibit at Galleria 121 inside the Pharr Memorial Library. The exhibit will be open from March 22, 2018 to April 22, 2018. Free entrance. Contact Hugo if you want a 4 x 6 glossy print out for $5 or an 8 &1/2 x 11 matte-style print out for framing at $10. (Frames not included. Orders can be picked up at an agreed location if you are in the RGV. For mailed orders, the total does not include shipping. To place an order directly CLICK HERE.) Or you can choose from many variety of sizes and styles of reproduction from our ONLINE GALLERY. (Gallery transactions are handled by FOTOMOTO.) The library’s hours are: Monday – Thursday 9:00 AM – 9:00 PM Friday & Saturday 9:00 AM – 6:00 PM Sunday 1:00 PM – 6:00 PM Directions (Click the image for more detailed view). We want to thank the Pharr Memorial Library staff for this great opportunity for Hugo. Thank you in particular to Adolfo Garcia, Library Director, and Mike Singleterry, Reference Librarian & Supervisor (and Galleria 121 curator).
Hugo was about three years old when one night while visiting family he broke away from all the other kids and went looking for something. He had the sudden urge to draw. Perhaps because he had found a small marker and naturally concluded that it had to be put to use.
He searched and searched but found nothing in the form of appropriate drawing paper. But instead of opting to just forget about it (drawing on the wall would have had severe consequences) he had a brilliant idea...the restroom is full of blank paper to draw on! So he went and got a 1 & 1/3 ft strip of toilet paper and began to draw. The rest is still historizising as we speak. The spectacular thing about this drawing is that it is an entire world onto its own...maybe even universe. There is so much going on in it. It was clear that, given that he had never had experience painting or drawing at that level, he had a gift. An imagination that countered the terrifying seizures which struck him frequently, paralysing him and those around him. (*Note: The picture was set in a light red in order to better contrast the drawing and bring it out.) Hugo has been staying busy creating. He wants to be successful in life. He wants to be worry-free and wealthy. It is tempting to simply encourage these ambitions by smiling and patting him on the back. But the truth is that the only way to achieve your goals is to work toward their fulfillment. So that is what he gets in response to his statements. And being a kid, naturally that sounds like a lot of work and not to mention, boring! Luckily, he is a very mature boy who deep down understands the link between providing value and receiving value. That's what it boils down to. More work to come.
Here is another of Hugo's epics. At a quick glance it looks like a whole lot of mess with a few clear subjects. But the weird and cool thing about technology is that it allows us to employ tactics that can reveal more to a story told in images. Like ghost-like plumes of smoke or glares of light in a dull photograph, this painting by Hugo hides a lot of its real message. Of course, this is said not as if he had planned it this way, but just as a reference to a discovery we came about as we were uploading the photo of the work and tried to apply a filter to improve its viewing quality. Observe below the outcome: Although the sketch lines are the same, applying a contrast between a black background and neon colors, the piece is able to offer a much more cohesive storyline of an "alien" world gone mad. There is a sense of alternate personalities of the figures in a much more action-driven context. What do you see?
